#160 Morhaf Thoughts on mortality and making every day count
Adam Webber
:
:

Morhaf is a doctor living in Seattle which is one of the places in the united states that was hit extremely hard by Covid-19. Morhaf also was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, his lungs where filled with fluid which made it nearly impossible to breath. Listening and talking to Morhaf made me realize that he cares so much about so many things. It was as though he knows the weight of every passing second - as though each moment was a grain of sand yet contained the weight of the world. He does not want to be forgotten and therefore he packs everything into each moment of his life to be contributing to make the world a better place. Since he is living with his eyes on death each day it also means that he is living each day with the utmost purpose that he can find around him. This lead him to be compelled to march with the BLM protests that took place in Seattle. Please support Morhaf’s books because they sound fascinating. You can find the links to Morhaf’s books here: Being Authentic: A Memoir https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1654374784/ and his book ROADS TO MEANING AND RESILIENCE WITH CANCER: https://www.amazon.com/ROADS-MEANING-RESILIENCE-CANCER-Resilience-ebook/dp/B07VBRBNSZ

#159 Lance The human side of sales
Adam Webber
:
:

Lance teaches people how to make sales. Cold calling is the art of picking up the phone and calling people that you do not know to sell them a product. That is a tall order. No one including myself likes to be sold. So in order to do this well there are a lot of things to learn. One of the first is to overcome the fear of rejection, the fear of being told no over and over. At the end of the day everyone has something to sell, is it our time for a job, a product that you have been working on, a book that you have written or a song or video that you created. Life revolves around this exchange. Getting good at sales is a life skill. Lance talks about the human side of the sale and how important it is. #158 Clemmy Find your tribe
Adam Webber
:
:

From a young age Clemmy has dealt with addiction. Some people would tell her that she was living an adventurous life that was made for a novel… and listening to her speak I tend to agree. But Clemmy is not glamorizing the hardships that she has faced or the challenges and destructive patterns that alcohol and drag abuse has on ones life. Clemmy has so much to teach us about fear and about facing our fears. Community is so important. Having good people who can help support us is so important. Listen to todays story from Clemmy and make sure to check out her artwork found here: http://Lebusque.com

#157 Antonio Facing your fears to find success
Adam Webber
:
:

Antonio knows what it is like to face rejection. He is an actor pursing his dreams of being on stage and preforming. This means you also get told no a lot. You also need to deal with difficult people. Antonio says that most people give up because of the pursuit - it can be hard but when you are striving for your goals it makes the journey all the more worth while. Antonio is always learning and getting better every day. He talks about how important it is to listen and not worry about trying to be perfect but rather taking on your fears whether they are small or large fears. #156 James Getting out of your comfort zone
Adam Webber
:
:

James challenged himself to get out of his comfort zone by auditioning for a play. He didn’t think he was going to get the role and had so much self doubt, but he did get the role, which led to his next challenge — getting up on stage and preforming in front of people. James talks about the emotions that he went though and how scary it was but he saw his goal all the way through. His advise, find someone to talk to, we don’t always need to try and act strong. https://www.instagram.com/phantomprojects/

#155 Amauri Dont be so hard on yourself
Adam Webber
:
:

Amauri talks to us about the balance between fear and taking action. One story that sticks in my mind is when Amauri tells us about an early memory that he had when he went up on stage for a piano recital… all eyes where on him and his mind blanked. This is a powerful story for me because it hits on how sometimes we feel the pressure to perform and we feel like the entire world is judging us and sometimes in moments like these we freeze and its hard to break out of the tension and self criticism for not being better or doing better. Sometimes we put more pressure on ourselves then what others actually expect and we end up judging ourselves more harshly than others even care to do. Here is Amauri’s story…

#152 Paul The perfect app that doesnt ship isnt a perfect app
Adam Webber
:
:

Today I had a chance to speak with Paul, who is an app developer and app instructor (https://supereasyapps.com) who is currently working on a new iPhone app for coffee lovers to get the perfect pour of coffee. Paul is a perfectionist so as someone who is creating things to release out into the world he needs to get comfortable with things not always being perfect. This means releasing apps into the world before they are “ready” or have all the glistening features that everyone would want. It means going slower than sometime you wish you where going. In Pauls words "so being comfortable with 80% done as being enough has helped. I want to help people, and the perfect app that doesn’t ship isn’t a perfect app.” Paul is on a mission to help people make a perfect brew of coffee and from the sound of it he is really loving what he is working on… so at the end of the day he is truly succeeding in his goals. #151 Ryan Dont worry about other people and getting the help that we need
Adam Webber
:
:

Ryan has dual jobs at the moment. He is a licensed hair stylist and also works as a therapist at a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Santa Barbra. Santa Barbara has just reopened for local businesses to start receiving customers again and Ryan has been receiving a flood of requests for appointment. He needs to balance the wave of clients with the real fears of the coronavirus. He has also been on the frontline treating patience at the mental health facility during the coronavirus pandemic. We speak about the importance of seeking mental health and how speaking with someone can take the weight and stress that you are feeling off and help you feel a little less overwhelmed. So much about getting help is just making the first call and once you do the fear of how the process happens gives way. I find that starting anything new, especially getting help is extremely scary… so just making the first step is a huge step and it gets less scary from there. #150 Jay Happy Birthday
Adam Webber
:
:

Jay called in on his birthday. Birthdays are interesting days, they are life’s mile markers that remind us of the passage of time. When we are born we come into the world alone but then if we are lucky, at some point we find someone special to share our days and moments with. Jay talks about a 5 year relationship that ended… leaving him to think more deeply about it. What had happened? There are still left over feelings and maybe he was the one who pushed them apart. Separation is hard… it tugs at the universe strings that remind us that we are in a world filled with other people but then again we are so alone. After an intense relationship we are left to wrestle and reconcile with the duality of togetherness and alone. Now Jay is talking to me about more time to work on himself, to enjoy each day because it is a gift and that life is short. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christophergonzallez/

:
:

Kareem’s story of success has elements that we are hearing over and over again from successful entrepreneurs; "at first i failed and things didn’t work as i expected, but I got back up and tried again.” Kareem didn’t care what other people thought and he just kept striving to create a business. #147 Aaliyah The outcome is greater than the fear
Adam Webber
:
:

Aaliyah is the type of person that is hard working and driven. She had a life plan mapped out in her mind. She excelled at athletics and competing on the soccer field. However in a snap instance she suffered a giant setback — she tore her ACL which forced her to reevaluate her mental model on who she was as a person and what her future would be. At first this was a difficult blow and adjustment that she needed to make but as you will hear, Aaliyah is resilient, optimistic and focused on personal growth. She makes the best and most out of each situation that life throws at her. Even if life is a rollercoaster, we are all on the ride… might as well make the best of it. So much of our outlook on life is what determines if the roller coaster is fun, interesting, a challenge for the better or just a big scary thing that we don’t want to face.

#146 Emily Stay motivated
Adam Webber
:
:

Sometimes our fears can also be our biggest motivators. In Emily’s case she is focused and motivated to achieve a giant goal — to qualify and compete in the Olympics for running. In order to achieve this goal Emily needs to stay focused and motivated to train hard every day. But there is a fear that can creep into your mind… the “what if’s” … what if I don’t make it? These doubts can paralyze you and bring you down… or they can become your fuel and make you train harder. I will be rooting for Emily in the upcoming Olympic trails! As jack puts it, if you are scared of the dark but unwilling or unable to get to the light switch to turn on the lights you will never fix your problems or fears. When Jack was getting down on himself his weightlifting coach challenged him to stop feeling sorry for himself and keep being the best version of himself. Adam Webber
:
:

Sometimes going though a challenging experience can give us a new perspective on who we are. But there are times in our lives when character of who we think we need to be is challenged. In Sena’s case that happened during a college class. #140 Jarmell Fear of dogs
Adam Webber
:
:

Jarmell shares his story of his fear of dogs. When he was a young kid a dog jumped over a fence and bit him. That traumatic incident has stuck with Jarmell for all his life.To this day he avoids dogs at all costs. What is so interesting to me is that he has a job delivering packages to peoples homes, which by definition is a job where you confront your fear face to face on a daily basis. I think Jarmell is facing his fears without him knowing that his deep psychological destiny is to overcome his fear of dogs. NOTE: it was hard to hear Jarmell because he was outside working while conducting the live interview.

For Jeremy its a visceral memory of when he shattered his teeth bike riding as a young boy and for Nea it’s a dark night camping when owls would hoot in the night. #132 Tim Ask Why am I doing this
Adam Webber
:
:

Today Tim shared with me thoughts on how fear relates to a certain mindset. We spoke about fear through the lens of surfing and how whatever mindset we bring into the water with us dictates the experience… and Tim talks about how this is true with everything in life… in or out of the water. If we go surf and we start working about sharks, or getting the perfect wave, or other people in the lineup, or whatever the conditions might be we are taking ourselves out of the experience and defeating what the purpose is all about in the first place. Tim brings up a really interesting question to ask yourself… “why am I doing this in the first place?” this simple yet profound question can be a compass or north star back to what truly matters.

#131 Nelson Doing what you always wanted to do
Adam Webber
:
:

Nelson has started a podcast called Bronco Bones - which is all about the Denver Bronco’s football team. I love Nelson’s story so much because this is a story about someone who is stepping into his fears to achieve a dream, to do something that he always wanted to do. Nelson studied journalism in college and now all these years later he is returning to his early passion of journalism through the medium of Podcasting. To start something new is scary, as anyone who creates anything and puts it out into he world to judge is a scary thing. I have found that in life, the older we get we sometimes stop taking risks and we stop trying new things. I have found this to be true in my life until I decided to do what Nelson is doing with his podcast and force myself to do new things each year and expose myself in raw and vulnerable ways. The power of this is remarkable… what it does for the human soul to step into something that feels scary and daunting but to do it anyways because it aligns with who you are at your core is paramount. As Nelson describes in this podcast… recording his interview podcasts is exhilarating and an amazing feeling. I am so excited for Nelson and what he is doing. #124 David House on fire
Adam Webber
:
:

Today I had one of my old friends jump on a call with me. I rang him up out of the blue to get this recording done at the last minute. David shared with me a story from his childhood where he had to jump out a window from his house that burnt to the ground. He also spoke about how important it is to find a therapist and have someone that you can talk with. In some ways his story about jumping out of his burning home has echos of symbolism in what he is now doing as an adult and seeing a therapist… he is lighting his own life on fire and burning down the walls that we construct to protect us. In order to grow, heal and become stronger, sometimes we need to be willing to burn. David shares with you to not try and hold everything in yourself… but share… talk to someone, don’t try and do everything alone. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/violintense/

#112 Pizza Lover You are not alone
Adam Webber
:
:

Pizza Lover wanted to keep her identity private. She also connected to the podcast while outside so it was a little hard to hear her at times but her stories, fears and pains are still very real and significant. Pizza Lover has been hurt badly in her last relationship, she trusted someone with her love and body. He turned out to be unfaithful and dishonest. He also gave her a STD that she was able to treat and cure but even though the STD is gone the pain of a bad relationship and the stigma of contracting a disease still lives on. I believe in Pizza Lover and that she is still fighting each day to become better and not let the spirit or stigma of a curable disease define her. One day at a time we heal and get better. She would want you to know that you are not alone and to have compassion for yourself.

#111 Ryan Becoming the change in his life
Adam Webber
:
:

Ryan shares a story of tremendous growth. For so many of us early pain leads us down a path of avoidance. We want to avoid the early pain so we cover it up with vices. It makes sense that we wouldn’t want to confront those scary experiences so they leave a mark that is there waiting for us to get the courage to face them. It isn’t until we are willing to go to that scary place and face these wounds that we can set ourselves free of the invisible chains that are holding us back. This is what Ryan had to go through and it took the experience of being honest with this other person about what his pains were to set him on a life journey of healing and improving himself every day. Ryan shares an incredible story of doing the work, going into the dark places and coming out changing his life for the better.

Armondo recorded a podcast with me about how fear from our youth can impact us later on and when we don’t address the early emotional baggage it can cause us to turn to more harmful and negative sides of fear. We can end up hiding from parts of ourselves instead of addressing them. But once Armando recognized how fear was effecting his life and the choices he was making he had the power to change his life and live in a more positive way. We also spoke about how sports and fear are interlinked and how there are overlaps between the mindsets that we have and our performance. #90 Snoota Sola The 5 senses and a positive attitude

Snoota Sola’s main message - never get discouraged. Snoota says to live your best life, keep a positive attitude and know that life is 90% attitude and 10% circumstance so make sure to know the difference between positive attitude and negativity. Something interesting to me was the focus on the 5 sense to use as a way to refocus your mind and body on better things… stimulate smell like through incense or the ears through sound but how effective the 5 senses can be in creating what we think about and focusing on positive things. #76 Al A Radical Transformation
Adam Webber
:
:

Al reminds me of the butterfly metaphors that we use to describe someone who has visibly gone through a massive transformation in their lives and come out the other side a changed person. When he was younger he spent so much time isolating himself that when it came time to make friends and be social, he was so unsure of himself. Al had to put himself though a radical transformation where he searched inwardly and outwardly for things that felt he could connect with to become a truer version of himself. He became addicted to self improvement and growing. He put in the hard work and from the sound of his story his life has transformed and he has taken flight. Check out Al’s YouTube and a link to a podcast that he recommends that helped him figure out “life’s rules” because as he puts it "If you don’t know the rules, you can’t play the game”. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-art-of-charm/id212382281 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKiqkrts7V9ivl19PtdgVtg/featured

#75 Nasir When dreams transition and fear fades
Adam Webber
:
:

From the age 6 Nasir had a voice inside that said something was different and it scared him. The fear came from the fact that the world on the outside was not reflecting who Nasir knew he was from the inside. In his heart Nasir was a man, but his cousin was telling him to get ready to grow breasts when you grow up — because Nasir had the organs of a female. The shattering feeling of the world not recognizing your inner voice and that your dreams of being a man might not become the reality is a haunting premise that can break a heart. Maybe it was from experiencing fear, a different view of life that in his later years gave Nasir a voice and material to channel artwork that fuels his creativity but again Nasir had to make a choice — to go through a transition with injecting testosterone and risk losing your singing voice and maybe lose the thing that brings you peace and safety or to not go through with the transition and not honor the inner voice of who you are. This is Nasir’s beautiful story of transition and Nasir’s amazing voice. #72 Barbie Faith introspection and love
Adam Webber

Barbie has had a ton of amazing success in her past business ventures. She has run a multi-million dollar business but she has also experienced the bitter taste of failure - and I was along for the ride. In a partnered venture with Barbie rebuilt an online platform that despite the amazing idea behind the technology we could not get to product market fit and had many bumps in the road. In todays conversation barbie shared with me a little perspective from her reflections on success and failure, lessons of forgiveness, figuring out how to take care of our own “sides of the street”, being honest and not bringing old wounds into new relationships. Barbie is extremely talented and smart so it was a really good experience for me to be able to talk with her about what she had been thinking about since we folded the company that we had collaborated on many years ago now. Tony calls this change Agency - it places the responsibility for our lives and actions back on us. It means we need to take the steering wheel and drive because waiting around for someone else to do it means that we probably won’t end up with the life that we want in the end. Adam Webber

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Natalie about fear. Natalie works in the movie industry and she discusses with me what its like to work in an industry where it's so competitive that you are not sure if you will make it and how the industry can be cut throat and turn a lot of people away after a while. This is a scary premise that the thing that you love doing in your life can also be harsh, competitive and dog-eat-dog. Natalie encourages us to keep going though, continue to put ourselves out there and network - find good people who are sharing in the journey and how acknowledging our fears can be the best ways to work on becoming better. #64 Alexis A car accident and halo brace
Adam Webber
:
:

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Alexis who has a fear of driving. Understandable, she was driving and the next thing she knew was that she woke up in the hospital and the doctor was telling her that she would need to wear a halo neck brace for the next six months. Her attitude, "let's party" but maybe that was the MDMA that was lingering in her system after overdosing the night before. Regardless, if you have not looked up a halo brace, I had to, they are super gnarly. One of the worst parts for Alexis was seeing how much pain she put her mother through during the entire experience. Now Alexis is learning to get comfortable behind the wheel again - going at her own pace and with support driving again. Next time you are driving behind someone that might be going a little slow, remember to have some compassion and slow down for them. You never know what someone is going through in this life. Be kind. IG: https://www.instagram.com/thelocalcomedian https://twitter.com/rideslikealexus

#62 Sammy Trauma childhood pain and the power of love
Adam Webber
:
:

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Sammy about fear and trauma that started at a young age but also Sammy brings awareness that trauma can even begin from the time a child is in her mothers womb. Life can be so delicate on one hand and if not properly cared for and loved and become deeply effected by our environment. Sammy grew up in a unsafe environment and had to deal with her mother continuously getting involved in bad relationships that put Sammy and her siblings in a harmful and traumatic situation. Sammy was victim and witnessed years of abuse from the men that her mother was involved with and she never felt safe or secure. She also was the oldest and took on a feeling of responsibility to take care of her siblings starting when she was just 6 years old. So while life can be delicate and fragile, life can also be resilient and strong… like Sammy - she has evolved into a voice of awareness and understanding. She is not repeating the destructive patterns that she was raised in but rather she has become a beacon of light and love with a goal to make the world a safer and better place. Sammy has dedicated her life to child and mental health advocacy. https://www.acesconnection.com/ Website: https://dissociationation.wordpress.com/
